U.S. Approves Possible $200 Million F-404 Engine Fans Sale to Spain

The United States has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Spain valued at approximately $200 million for F-404 engine fans and related equipment. The approval was confirmed after the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) delivered the required certification to the U.S. Congress following a determination by the U.S. State Department.

Under the proposal, the Government of Spain has requested the purchase of 200 additional F-404 engine fans, which will be added to an earlier Foreign Military Sales case. The previous agreement included 50 engine fans along with associated electronic units and support services. With the new request, the total number of engine fans involved in the combined procurement would reach 250 units.

The package includes not only the engine fans but also a range of supporting equipment and services designed to ensure operational readiness. These include computer power supply units, receiver exciter systems, spare parts, consumables, repair and return support, and both classified and unclassified technical documentation. The agreement also covers training, contractor logistics support, engineering assistance, and technical services to support the integration and operation of the equipment.

According to U.S. officials, the proposed sale supports broader foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the capabilities of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally. Enhancing Spain’s defense capabilities contributes to regional stability in Europe and supports improved interoperability with U.S. and allied military forces.

The equipment will help Spain maintain and modernize its defense capabilities while ensuring compatibility with allied systems and operations. Officials noted that Spain is fully capable of integrating the equipment into its armed forces and that the sale will not alter the overall military balance in the region.

The F-404 engine fans involved in the proposed sale will be supplied from U.S. Navy inventory, and there are currently no offset agreements associated with the deal. Any such arrangements would be negotiated directly between Spain and the relevant contractors at a later stage.

Implementation of the potential sale will not require additional U.S. government or contractor personnel to be stationed in Spain. Furthermore, the transaction is not expected to affect the readiness of U.S. defense forces.

The final value of the deal may vary depending on Spain’s final procurement requirements and the completion of formal sales agreements.
